Default Athletic Bilbao Vs Atletico Madrid - Preview and Prediction

Athletic Bilbao Vs Atletico Madrid - Preview and Prediction,
Match Analysis:
Three days after Madrid won the Super Cup, Sanchez Flores’s side displayed a superb performance in their last game against Sporting Gijon. Not only did they scored four goals but also defended well, good passing, good moves – generally everything was perfect.

On the other hand, Athletic Bilbao was less convincing in their win against newly promoted Hercules. Despite having the better opportunities and more experience players, Bilbao only managed to secure a 1-0 win.

With both managers eyeing for three points here today, it will be interesting to see who will be the braver manager set out a more offensive formation. By the looks of it, Madrid will be more than happy to play a more defensive formation and try and hit Bilbao on the counter.

With Simao and Reyes likely to start at both flanks supporting Aguero and Forlan, Bilbao will be forced to play with a deeper defense line that wanted. However, playing a deeper defense line would mean that Bilbao’s midfielders will have more ground to cover and this might be the crucial factor later on in the game.

Key Players:
Fernando Llorente will have to be the player to watch out for as the World Cup winner often scores winners for Bilbao. His physical presents and height might just cause some problems for the Madrid defense during set pieces or crosses. (His goal against Hercules a fort night ago also came from a free kick where he scored from a header)

Javi Martinez, another World Cup winning during the summer will have a key role to play in central midfield as the Spaniard is often the player that links the play between midfield and attack.

Diego Forlan will have to be the danger man as his goal scoring instinct might just get him a few goals. After such a good World Cup performance under his belt, i do expect things to be even better for Forlan this season. In addition, keep a close eye on Sergio Aguero, as his runs and movements often catches opponents out.

Head to Head:
The recent head to head suggest that this is a close encounter with Madrid edging it. Atletico Madrid have won six of the last ten meeting, losing on three occasion and drawing once.

Verdict:
This is not the first time im mentioning this but the partnership between Aguero and Forlan is arguably one of the most lethal partnership up front. The deadliness of the partnership have been highlighted in their last two games when they ripped Gijon and Inter Milan apart.

Yes Atletico Madrid do have an awful away record last season winning only twice the entire season, while Bilbao had a decent home record, losing only four times. However, things have change, Madrid are now a much improved side and I can see Sanchez Flores side challenge for the 3rd spot this season.

Having said that Madrid is an improve side, I would rather be a bit cautious on them, therefore i would a level handicap(draw no bet) instead of a -0.25 head start.
